Click today's link for an excellent Assessment for Learning sheet to accompany the previous post's lesson on Writing to Describe.
The sheet encourages pupils to identify whether or not they are making effective use of descriptive verbs, adverbs and similes as well pushing them to identify their most frightening sentence and explain why it creates fear in the reader; finally, pupils pick out their least successful sentence and suggest an improvement.
This is a brilliant resource for making proper use of self-assessment as a learning process rather than a pointless box tick. We firmly believe that Assessment for Learning, done properly, is a fantastic learning tool and encourages pupils to develop the independent and reflective learning skills that will be required of them in later life... Which is why you'll find full, structured AfL activities embedded in all of our units of work...

PS - to get your pupils into the AfL zone and really make the most of it, it's best to model how to do it for them; we suggest filling our sheet out on your IWB together with your class before letting pupils loose on it independently to assess their own work.
